Birding With My Cousin Ruth

Us Identifying Birds Online
The Swamp

Northern Pintails

Mallard

Eastern Phoebe

Geese Landing

Mallard Sunning

Praying Mantis
Today my cousin Ruth and I went birding and saw many birds and animals. Including hard to find species like a pintail and a Praying Mantis, but I'll talk about that later.
First I got all ready for birdwatching and packed some snacks, then my cousin Ruth came and picked me up. She drove me to a neighbourly famous swamp. We walked down there where a few pairs of Mallards and what Ruth thought was a female Wood Duck. Then we got back in the van and drove to they other side of the swamp, there I spotted the pintails. I took several pictures of them but only posted one on this blog.
Then we drove off to another Grand River Trail. Here it was blazing hot so we didn't stay very long but still saw a fair amount of birds.
After that we had a snack and went to a place Ruth goes to often. It was 8km. but we only walked a short distance. I saw many critters and small animals there including Praying Mantis's! All of a sudden many bikes came riding by us so we went off the trail and almost steped on a Garder Snake which slittered away so fast that I could'nt take a picture of it. So we continued walking and saw a few signs about Global Warming. As we walked tons of species of grasshoppers suddenly started hopping on our legs. We then turned around and saw many butterflies inluding Swallowtails. But it was so hot that we had to go home.
I had a great time!
Thank you Cousin Ruth.

Cousin Ruth's-Kitchener

We had just awoken and I did all my morning necessities, brush teeth, clean face, etc. I had breakfast and took Max for his morning walk. After that we packed all Max's traveling supplies and drove off to Kitchener. It took a few hours to get there so we watched several movies to pass the time. Once we arrived there we went to a church that our grandparents would be working at for a couple of months. The church has fourty acers. At that church there were two little feisty Yorkshire Terriers. Max played with them for a while and the we went to Swiss Chalet for dinner. Then we went to Cousin Ruth's house.
They had a big black dog named Dakota and he is nine years old. They also had many bird books I talked with cousin Ruth for a while about birds then visited Dakota.

When walk over to get the mail (the mailbox is by Tim's house) we smell........guess,...........guess, ........really, guess...SKUNK! The garbage in Tim's backyard has been there for a long time. He has alsomst finshed cleaning his house and ABOUT TO TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE!!

We have shelter under our fort which is perfect for skunks and they might move over here.

Hot Summer Days

This summer is eceptionaly hot, so hot that today I can't take Max for a walk. Today it is 40 degrees Celsius and Pugs are prone to heatstroke. Even my back has turned brown and I rarely exercise on my trampoline. Of course the picture of Max was early and only 20 degrees Celsius and he wasn't panting rapidly (a sign of heatstroke).

Anyway I don't have much time to write because were going to the Lake.

Squirrels, squirrels, squirrels

Today when I went outside to feed the pond fish, a loud banging came from the corner of our yard, I soon found out it was a Black Squirrel. It was destroying the bird feeder I had just made after it ate most of the seed! There was also a Eastern Chipmunk that wasn't doing much harm.

There is a skunk or should I say family of skunks living in our neighbours yard. They spray every morning and the smell stays all day. One time they came right in our front yard when my dad was loading his truck for the morning's work. My dad was surprised and a little scared when he noticed them. My dad was blessed that he did not get sprayed.

Even for skunks to come in the front yard with humans and lights on. Well, you just can't predict what an animal will do next.

DOGS AND fishing

A Blue throat Sunfish I had caught with the help of James!

Our dog cuddling into me!

Last week we bought a Pug puppy in Bobcaygeon which is near Pigeon Lake. Nobody had wanted him because of his little white paw of him, they thought it was a disease or infection. It was really only a birth mark and we thought it was cute looking so we bought him for $750.00. $OLD! The owner or should I say past owner of this dog had 40 fishing rods and said he could just walk out to Pigeon Lake and catch 20 fish! Speaking of fishing we went fishing yesterday.
Yesterday we were just getting ready for our drive to Lake Scugog. It didn't take very long and before we knew we were in the van on our way to Scugog! Jesse was watching a movie called Franklin and the Green Knight. I watch some of it but put most of my attention to other things like our dog on my lap. Now lets skip to the part where we were fishing after 7:30pm.
It was dusk time and many Blue throat Sunfish were foraging for food in the shallow end of the water. Jesse was the only one fishing in the shallow end. Then James, a fishing expert came to watch us fish. Suddenly, I caught a Blue throat Sunfish which over 7 inches long. My dad couldn't get the hook out of the Sunfish so James did.
Jesse caught the most fish including Rock Bass, Blue throat Sunfish and a crayfish. My mom caught some Perch, I caught some sunnies and my dad caught nothing!
That was my weekend (not including Sunday)

Destroyed Garden?

When we had just arrived home from our shopping I spoted two adult male robins territorial fighting. But this was severe fighting because they were slapping and puting each other to the ground! Usually birds sing to fight not physicaly. My little brother Jesse had witnessed the fight too, and was very excited to see it.
Here is our pond. I just posted it for my grandparents to tell me if they think it is doing well.

This morning when I had just awoken I noticed that my garden was destroyed!! I think it was that nasty racoon that did it or maybe that big crow that comes in our backyard. I only managed to get a picture of some of it. Most of the seed was on the ground, weeds, crushed plants and a broken birdbath!!! LETS VOTE! In the comments tell me if you think it was the nasty racoon or the big crow.
As we were shopping my dad picked out some English Moss for the pond.
AND THAT WAS MY EXCITING SUNDAY!!!
