Backyard Birds of Arizona

Anna's Hummingbird
Common Redpoll

First I'd like to apologize to mon@rch about the correction of the Anna's Hummingbird, you were right mon@rch.

Now for the post: Today as I went birding in our backyard I discovered a new visitor, the Common Redpoll. I have seen this bird in trails nearby but never before in out backyard. I don't have much to saw though, so goodbye

So you have Redpolls all the way south in Arizona!

I have to agree with Ruth, this Redpoll needs some closer investigation and doesn't look like any redpolls that I am getting! Next question is what are you little birdie? First guess would be a funny House Finch but hmm, still something isn't right! I pulled my Sibleys out on page 529 and doesn't look like any of these finch! Picking out obvious field mark regarding the bills, this is long and pointy! Something that appears in the Cassion's Finch! I have never seen this species but still the red cap doesn't look right! Then again the birds don't always follow all the rules in the book?? No worries about the Anna's and to be honest, I didn't even notice the missing A! That's what is great about birds is the ability to learn!

Hello,
ruth-Maybe!

mon@rch-My first guess was a House Finch, but then I saw dark streaks so I thought it was a Cassin's Finch. Then I saw the dark red cap so I thought it was a Common Redpoll, it seemed to be in the flock of House Finches. Until they flew. The mystery bird stayed there. So I'm puzzuled too!

Hello,
I found your post today while trying to decide if I should start a blog for my backyard birding products website: www.genquest.ca/stoneart/
Keep up the terrific work. I am very inspired by people like you exploring nature. Today our society is largely seperated of nature and I can't help but wonder what a future without this connection could mean? We have a lot of work ahead of us so, please keep up your efforts and kean interest and wonder!
By the way, its been a great year for the common redpoll here in Southern Ontario. I've counted hundreds in my backyard.
